Varicose Veins

Varicose veins are enlarged, twisted veins that often appear just beneath the surface of the skin. They most often affect the legs and feet, but can also develop in other parts of the body. This condition occurs when the valves inside the veins don’t work as they should. Instead of keeping blood flowing toward the heart, the damaged valves allow blood to pool in the veins, causing them to stretch, swell, and become more visible. At Heart Care Center of Northwest Houston, our specialists diagnose and treat varicose veins as part of our commitment to your vascular health. Call us today to schedule a consultation.

What Causes Varicose Veins

The veins in the legs work harder than other veins because they are fighting gravity to return blood to the heart. Over time, extra pressure in the veins can make the walls weak and affect how the valves function.

This can happen due to aging, standing or sitting for long hours, pregnancy, obesity, or a family history of vein problems. People who don’t move around much during the day may also be more likely to develop varicose veins.

Any Questions About Varicose Veins?

What Do Varicose Veins Look and Feel Like

Varicose veins often look dark purple or blue. They may appear bulging or twisted like cords. Some people experience no discomfort, while others feel heaviness, aching, or throbbing in the legs. The pain may get worse after sitting or standing for a long time.

In some cases, the skin near the veins can become dry, itchy, or discolored.

Possible Complications Linked to Varicose Veins

Although varicose veins are usually not harmful, they can sometimes lead to more serious health issues. These include skin ulcers, swelling, blood clots, or bleeding if the skin over the veins breaks.

People with varicose veins may also be more likely to develop chronic venous insufficiency, a condition where blood doesn’t flow properly in the leg veins for a long time. In rare cases, clots in the deeper veins (deep vein thrombosis) may also occur, which requires prompt medical attention.

Treatment Options for Varicose Veins

There are numerous ways to manage varicose veins.

For many patients, lifestyle changes such as regular walking, wearing compression stockings, and avoiding long periods of standing or sitting can help.

However, in cases where symptoms are more severe or don’t improve, medical treatments may be needed. These include procedures that close or remove the affected veins.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are Varicose Veins Only a Cosmetic Issue?

Not always. While some people may only notice their appearance, others can experience discomfort, swelling, or complications that need treatment.

Can Walking Help with Varicose Veins?

Yes, regular walking improves circulation in the legs and can help reduce pressure in the veins.

Can Varicose Veins Lead to Heart Problems?

Varicose veins themselves don’t cause heart disease, but they are a sign that your blood circulation may not be working as it should. It’s helpful to have your overall vascular health checked.
