Congestive Heart Failure

Congestive heart failure (CHF), often called heart failure, is a long-term condition that happens when the heart doesn’t pump blood as well as it should. When this happens, blood can back up into other areas of the body, like the lungs, liver, or legs, causing symptoms such as shortness of breath, swelling, and fatigue. Despite the name, heart failure doesn’t mean the heart has stopped working completely; it means the heart is struggling to keep up with the body’s needs.

Different Types of Heart Failure

There are different types of heart failure depending on which part of the heart is affected.

  1. Left-sided heart failure is the most common and can lead to fluid buildup in the lungs.
  2. Right-sided heart failure can cause swelling in the legs and belly.

In some cases, both sides of the heart are affected. Heart failure is also classified by how well the heart pumps with each beat—this is called ejection fraction.

Symptoms of Congestive Heart Failure

The signs of CHF can develop slowly or appear suddenly. Common symptoms include:

  • Shortness of breath, especially when lying down or during physical activity
  • Constant fatigue and weakness
  • Swelling in the legs, ankles, or feet (edema)
  • Rapid or irregular heartbeat
  • Coughing or wheezing, sometimes with white or pink mucus
  • Sudden weight gain from fluid retention

If you notice any of these symptoms, it’s important to seek medical attention. Early diagnosis and treatment can help manage CHF effectively.

Causes and Risk Factors of Congestive Heart Failure

There are several conditions that can lead to congestive heart failure.

One of the most common is coronary artery disease, which causes the arteries to become narrowed or blocked, reducing blood flow to the heart. High blood pressure is another major factor, as it forces the heart to work harder than normal, which can eventually weaken the heart muscle.

A heart attack can also lead to CHF by damaging part of the heart muscle, making it less effective at pumping blood. Diabetes increases the risk by contributing to both high blood pressure and artery damage. Heart valve disease can interfere with proper blood flow, placing extra strain on the heart.

Other factors include obesity, which adds stress to the heart, and sleep apnea, which can disrupt oxygen levels and affect heart function over time. Lifestyle choices such as smoking, heavy alcohol use, and lack of regular physical activity also increase the risk of developing congestive heart failure.

Diagnosis and Treatment of Congestive Heart Failure

Our team of heart specialists uses advanced diagnostic tools to assess heart function, including:

  • Echocardiogram to get an ultrasound of the heart
  • Electrocardiogram (EKG) to check heart rhythm
  • Blood tests to detect heart stress markers
  • Stress tests to evaluate heart performance during activity

Treatment Options

  • While CHF is a chronic condition, proper treatment can improve quality of life. Our approach includes:
  • Medications to reduce strain on the heart
  • Lifestyle changes such as a low-sodium diet, regular exercise, and quitting smoking
  • Medical devices like pacemakers or implantable defibrillators for severe cases
  • Surgical options, including coronary bypass or heart valve repair
  • Ongoing monitoring to adjust treatment as needed
